The word “sauna” originated in Finland and is a sacred place for many Finns. It also symbolizes maternal warmth and protection; that is why people sought the comfort of a sauna when in distress and during hard trials of life. We relax and meditate in a sauna.
Our body withstands the high sauna temperatures since the sweat evaporates and thus cools the skin surface. After 10-20 minutes in a sauna, our heartbeat increases to 120-150 beats per minute and the skin reaches the temperature of around 40 °C. That is when we begin to sweat. Alternating baths is a sauna specialty; the body is first heated in a sauna and then cooled off by showering. The hot air eases muscle tension and causes profuse sweating. The sauna may also represent cosmetic care. The blood circulation increases which consequently improves the amount of blood in the skin. Profuse sweating is important for the secretion of salts and toxic substances from the body and it also cleans skin pores. The skin epidermis regenerates more easily and quickly, especially if we remove the dead skin via a gentle pilling prior to the sauna session.
In the sauna, you need 2 large towels or 1 large sheet, 2 small towels, rubber slippers which you will only be using for sauna sessions, and fresh laundry. You may also borrow towels and sheet in our Wellness Centre.
Hydrotherapy is one of the oldest forms of treatment; it was already employed by the Greeks and Romans. Bathhouses and warm baths offered the comfort for body and soul and thus became a part of their lives. They were also attributed with curative effects on rheumatism and other health dysfunctions and were also valued for their comfort, relaxation, and well-being. The water temperature in the whirlpool is adjustable and may set from 26 °C to 42 °C.
